About Career:
This position is open to Internal CSMD Candidates only. The individual in this position coordinates the daily management of School of Science and Health laboratories on one or more CSM campuses. The person in this position provides key support for academic science or health programs and courses. This person collaborates with the other lab support personnel and faculty and staff to assure the laboratory environment supports the educational and technical needs of the programs and various curricula.
The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College’s staff and students. The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks: Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.
Lab Coordinator I Job
Location: La Plata, MD
Job Type: Full-Time
Salary: $39,164.00 – $51,503.00 Annually
Qualification: Associate degree in science or health area
Requirements:
- Coordinates supply orders, inventory and storage of all supplies and equipment used in the assigned science and health laboratories. Notifies the Lab Coordinator II in a timely manner of lab supplies that need to be ordered. Maintains a chemical inventory and Material Safety Data Sheets.
- Assure labs and supplies are secured and managed in compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Maintains a current inventory of equipment and supplies used to facilitate student/faculty interaction.
- Coordinates cleaning, maintenance, and repair of all equipment used in the assigned laboratories. Keeps equipment and labs in repair by monitoring equipment status and performing routine maintenance and minor repairs. Notifies the Lab Coordinator II of equipment in need of repair.
- Organizes labs and performs routine upkeep of prep rooms and laboratory class rooms.
- Meets with maintenance, service, and repair professionals, signs service receipts, and receives any instructions.
- Maintains safe working conditions for students, faculty and other employees. Ensures proper safety equipment is available and proper safety precautions are practiced in handling hazardous substances. Advises faculty and staff on specific control measures established to protect employees.
- Collects, stores, and inventories hazardous waste materials; autoclaves bacterial cultures and materials. Tests laboratory safety equipment to make sure that it is functioning.
- Contributes to the development of policies and procedures related to the safe usage of equipment and laboratory space. Works with the Lab Coordinator II to create Standard Operating Procedures.
- Prepares necessary materials and set-ups for assigned labs: Prepares health equipment and supplies, chemical reagents and/or biological materials and media. Follows required aseptic techniques in lab preparation.
- Assists faculty with the selection of appropriate supplies and equipment for lab use
- Ensures that each lab class has the necessary materials prior to the scheduled meeting time. Notifies the Lab Coordinator II and faculty immediately of any problems with the labs.
- Serves as a resource to students using the labs during practice sessions.
- Contributes to the research, preview and ordering of supplies, equipment, media or software for the science and health laboratories; discusses program/course needs with faculty and submits requests to the Lab Coordinator II.
- Develops and maintains professional relationships to assist faculty with laboratory support.
- Contributes to orienting, training and assisting faculty in understanding lab procedures, routines, and the use of laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Contributes to the School of Science and Health planning process.
- Contributes to annual budget development in collaboration with Lab Coordinator II
- Participates in college, school, and program meetings as appropriate.
Qualification:
- One to Three years of experience in science or health field.
- Knowledge of healthcare equipment and supplies
- Knowledge of basic techniques in microbiology preparation and maintenance of cultures.
- Knowledge of chemical measurements, calculations, and preparation of chemical solutions.
- Knowledge of general OSHA regulations pertaining to the use, storage, and disposal of non-hazardous and hazardous materials or substances.
- Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures.
- Knowledge of function and utilization of Chemical Hygiene Plan.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable role-playing during simulation experiences
- Proficient in the operation of computer and application software.
- Ability to trouble shoot and test new lab equipment and lab procedures.
Physical Requirements:
- Requires lifting of objects (mannequins, equipment, etc.) up to 35 lbs.
- Requires work with science and medical equipment including latex based products
- Requires occasional inter-campus travel or travel to local stores to pick up supplies
